Recommendations for Further Reading: Prayer

Over the past two years, our missional community has discussed several books, including The Practice of the Presence of God  (Brother Andrew),  Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World (Henri Nouwen) and Road to Reality: Coming Home to Jesus (K.P. Yohannon), all focused on being in God’s presence and being led by God on mission. If there is a common thread through these saints’ writings, it is prayer. They all insist that prayer is the door to God’s presence, and we, as believers, cannot hope to be successful in any type of mission without an intimate connection to God.

Missional Community begins with, and is sustained by, prayer. This can feel haphazard early on, as it did in our case, not even knowing what we were praying for. Prayer focuses believers. Prayer allows our hearts to change and our eyes to open to what God is doing around us, and the work he is inviting us into.

ONCE ON MISSION YOU WILL SOON DISCOVER THAT PRAYING FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO LOVE THOSE AROUND YOU MEANS YOU WILL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO LOVE THOSE AROUND YOU.
